Laboratory of applied biophysics

(Joined laboratory with FNS of UPJPS in Kosice)

Head:

Prof. RNDr. Pavol Miškovský, DrSc

Scope of the Laboratory:

The scientific work of the laboratory has an inter-disciplinary character. Our scientific interest is mainly focused on the investigation of new photosensitizers, which could be used for diagnostic and treatment of cancer diseases. Laboratory has particular interest in the research and development of progresive techniques of Raman spectroscopy and their applications in molecular biology of cells, tissues and organs.

Research activities and selected applications:

  • Study of conformation of biomacromolecules and their interaction with drug ligands
  • Study of collective behavior of biological systems,
  • Study of physical and chemical mechanism of the anti-tumor action of drugs in cells and in laboratory animals
  • Study of PDT induced apoptosis in cells
  • Research and development of nanoparticle-based drug delivery
  • Development of nanoparticle optical sensors for detection of specific molecules

Experimental methods and equipment:

  • Raman micro- and macro- spectroscopy and imaging in UV-VIS (240-550nm)
  • Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)
  • Raman microspectroscopy in combination with optical tweezers
  • Fluorescence spectroscopy and imaging (application of green fluorescent proteins)
  • Microcalorimetry (ITC and DSC), stop-flow
  • Predictive modeling of signal and metabolic pathways in living cells
